LAKE MARY, Fla.,None — The U.S. Postal Service is closing another mail distribution center, and that could slow down your mail service.
The work done at the center in Lake Mary will be moved to the main distribution center near the Orlando International Airport.
The mail could take at least another day longer for delivery. People who use the drive-up mailbox at the distribution center are disappointed. They said it is convenient for them and they know it'll be on its way very soon.
WFTV broke the bad news to people who come to the Lake Mary postal distribution center all the time to drop off their mail.
"I like it because it's open til 7 or whatever, and if you want it to get out, it gets there the next day, so it's just disappointing," customer Jaylee Human said.
Lake Mary area customers said using the distribution center to mail postage is much more convenient than traveling another two miles through heavy traffic to the Lake Mary post office.
"You can drop stuff off at Lake Mary. It'll get there the next day. Now it'll probably take a couple more days to get to its destination, which is bad," customer Donna Lucas said.
The U.S. Postal Service said closing the distribution center and others across the country will save $2 billion.
The 400 union workers at the center are guaranteed jobs within 50 miles. There are no openings at the Lake Mary post office right now. WFTV was told that some of the workers might just choose retirement over a longer drive.
Last year, the Daytona Beach distribution center was closed and consolidated with the Lake Mary location, so some workers already have long commutes.
Over the last five years, First Class mail volume dropped by 25 percent.
"I think the postal system's gonna be obsolete eventually I think, or else we're gonna be paying a dollar a letter," Human said.
Workers at the distribution center wouldn't talk to WFTV about the closing. The Postal Service said it hasn't decided what it will do with the property yet.
