Police presence increased at DeLand H.S. after threat rumors circulate

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities continue to investigate an alleged threat posted on Facebook and rumors circulating around DeLand High School Wednesday.

Two students alerted authorities Tuesday after allegedly overhearing that there was going to be a shooting at the school on Thursday.

Authorities said they also received information regarding a Facebook posting that contained a threat directed at the school, but the student who reported it wasn't able to provide any specifics and said the post had been taken down.

Authorities said that the alleged threat is students talking about rumors and what they've overheard from others, and that there is no substantiation of any actual threat.

The sheriff's office and the school are actively addressing the rumors with information to students and parents, and are continuing to investigate.

In addition to the investigation and efforts at rumor control, there will be an increased law-enforcement presence on campus Wednesday and Thursday, authorities said.
