Police: Report of armed attack outside Daytona Beach Publix ‘never occurred’

The reported attack outside a Publix in Daytona Beach involving a woman and armed men Wednesday evening never actually happened, police said Thursday.

“This incident and report appears to be due to some type of mental episode,” police said in a news release. “It is unknown what triggered the episode but, during this period, she was not thinking clear and believed an incident occurred when it had not.”

According to a police report, the woman was in the parking lot of the Publix in the 1500 block of Beville Road around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when a white van approached her.

A black male in a dark sweater got out of the van and held a phone toward the woman’s face asking for assistance. The original report said that the man then pulled a knife on the woman before he was joined by a white male who exited from the back of the van and brandished a gun.

The original report stated the victim kicked one of the men after they grabbed her arm. It also stated that one of the men then punched the woman in the side of the head before getting back into the van and fleeing the parking lot with a third man who was driving the van.

“It was learned through the investigation that her purse with all of its contents was on one of the seats of her vehicle,” the news release states. “Her dog was never in the car with her and was located at her house.”

No charges are pending at this time.
