Officer suspended for a day after patrol car hops sidewalk, hits suspected shoplifter on bike

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. — Police body camera footage captured the sound of impact of a Daytona Beach police officer’s vehicle hopping the sidewalk and hitting a woman accused of stealing cleaning supplies while she rode her bike.

Police said the woman, Latara Colay, 47, stole about $35 worth of cleaning supplies. Investigators said she was incapacitated following the impact and taken to the hospital.

Officers said she was not arrested, and the state attorney decided not to file charges against her.

Police said the impact of the collision lodged Colay’s bike into the fence, bending it and damaging the bike.

Daytona Beach Sgt. Donald Rininger said the June 15 crash happened after he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. He was suspended for a day following the collision.

The department investigated the crash and decided to suspend Rininger for a day because he was involved in a crash that the department said was the result of careless or preventable action.

It’s the first time the 16-year veteran has been disciplined.

He’s received six commendations that include two chief’s awards, two medals of merits and two unit commendations.

The state dropped the charges against Colay.

Channel 9 reached out to Rininger’s attorney and to Colay, but didn’t hear back from either.
