DELAND, Fla. — A small airplane crashed Thursday after it took off from an airport, according to DeLand police.

Just after 8:30 a.m., officers said shortly after a plane took off from the DeLand Municipal Airport it began to nose dive.

Police said the pilot was able to recover enough to hit the ground hard and did not hit the ground nose first.

The pilot, who was the only passenger on the plane, was not injured, police said.

There was significant damage to the landing gear.

The plane rolled over before ending upright in the grass near the runway, officials said.
