Taking root: Hundreds of free trees given away to residents in Volusia County

DELAND, Fla. — Volusia County resident are seeing a little more green after the city of DeLand hosted a tree giveaway this weekend.

The event was held Saturday in conjunction with the DeLand Breakfast Rotary Club.

On-site volunteers helped to hand out trees to residents.

Attendees got to choose their preferred kind of tree.

Live oaks and sand pine trees were only a few of the species available.

“It’s a good thing to have trees. We have a variety of trees,” said Mariellen Calabero. “We have some that are going to get really big, some that are going to stay small. So, we have a variety for people.”

Organizers said they were able to hand out around 900 trees, which is a little lower than past giveaways.

They said by next year, they plan to have about 2,000 trees available.
