Volusia County parents petitioning school district to let seniors have normal prom, graduation

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County parents are petitioning Volusia County Schools to let seniors have a normal graduation and prom.

The district has limited families to just two tickets each for graduation and isn’t doing prom this year because of concerns over the coronavirus.

Parents said they’ve seen other districts find alternative ways to do prom and graduation and they want to see Volusia County do the same.

They feel there are ways to make it work, whether that may be doing graduation outside or at a different venue. The parents plan to bring up their concerns at a school board meeting on Tuesday.

“We have to come to a point where we stop living in fear,” parent Buffi Smith said.
