NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A 64-year-old woman was bitten by a shark Friday morning in New Smyrna Beach in what Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue described as the county’s first shark bite of 2021.
Volusia County Capt. Tamra Malphurs said the woman, who lives in New Smyrna Beach, was bitten on the foot shortly after 9 a.m. while sitting atop a paddle board in about eight to 10 feet of water just south of the jetty.

Malphurs said the woman was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Volusia County is considered the shark bite capital of the world.
