Winter Park to begin burying power lines

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Officials in Winter Park will soon be asking homeowners to bury their lines.

The city is spending for the next decade to bury electrical wires.

However, lines on private property have to be buried by the homeowners. That's why the city is offering to do the service for $1,000 instead of the typical $3,000.

  • In 2008, the city officially began removing large power poles and overhead lines to improve reliability and aesthetics.
  • Residents are now able to help the city's overall goal by undergrounding their service lines  - the line that runs from the pole to your home.
  • When city electrical crews are already in neighborhoods undergrounding street lines, it will be more cost efficient if residents underground their service lines while the city is already there.
  • Residents can save up to $2,000 by undergrounding their service line during that time.
  • Undergrounding the service line is completely voluntary at this time.
