SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A local mother is demanding that Governor Rick Scott reject Judge Linda Schoonover's resignation.
9 Investigates first reported on Schoonover after she sent a Facebook friend request to a woman whose divorce she was presiding over.
Scott's office confirmed Wednesday that it has received a resignation letter from Schoonover.
A Seminole County woman told Channel 9's Christopher Heath that she is sending the governor a letter asking him to reject the resignation, saying she wants to see the judge answer for her actions.
Theresa Seigler said her custody battle started months before Schoonover was elected to her position. She said when Schoonover took over her case, what had been a slow process ground to a halt.
"It seemed like the calendar never really synced up with Schoonover?" Heath asked Seigler.
"No, it really did not," Seigler said.
Seigler sent a complaint letter to the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission, complaining about a series of canceled hearings with the judge and orders that were issued and then suddenly changed.
The JQC, which oversees judges, was already looking into Schoonover after she set up hidden cameras in her office, in the belief that someone was breaking in.
Schoonover, according to the JQC, also delayed cases for months.
Seigler said that's exactly what happened to her.
"We had a hearing and then it was canceled at the last minute," Seigler said.
If the governor accepts Schoonover's resignation, it doesn't mean her problems with the JQC are over.
While it is highly unlikely any of her decisions will be vacated, the JQC can still hold her accountable, although the most serious penalty it can hand down is the removal from office, which she is now doing voluntarily.
State Attorney Phil Archer, in charge of Brevard and Seminole counties, told Heath that right now he has no comment on the judge's resignation letter.
Attorneys representing Schoonover told Heath that they would be releasing a statement, but have yet to do so.
