Zip line adventure could be coming to Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach city leaders will hear a proposal this week from a company that wants to bring a new tourist attraction to the area.

The business, Zoom Air, wants to build a zip line at Tuscawilla Park near Nova Road and International Speedway Boulevard.

If the project takes off, the city would get some of the profits for letting the private company use the park and trees to create the unique attraction.

The aerial adventure is already at the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford, but Zoom Air wants to build a bigger one in Daytona.

Daytona resident Janelle Johnson supports the idea of having the high flying zip line.

"Definitely," Johnson said. "It'd be definitely nice to have something like this to do around town."

The City Commission could approve this week. However, some commissioners think the zip lines and aerial obstacles would take away from the park's serenity.

Paul Rae said it wouldn't be good for his disc golfing game.

"I think it would ruin what we have here with the disc golf," said Rae. "I think it would be an added obstacle."

But the aerial adventure could be added revenue for the city.  Zoom Air said the agreement could allow the city to share profits, giving taxpayers 15 percent of any profits under $2 million and 20 percent of any profits over $2 million.

Zoom Air said it has nearly doubled its attendance over the two years in business in Sanford.

Daytona officials will vote Wednesday on whether it will allow the zip lines in the park.
