ORANGE PARK, Fla. — An unemployed restaurant worker has been formally charged with sexually assaulting and killing 7-year-old Somer Thompson.
State Attorney Angela B. Corey announced Thursday that a Clay County grand jury indicted 24-year-old Jarred Mitchell Harrell on charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, sexual battery and lewd or lascivious battery.
Somer's body was found in a Georgia landfill two days after she vanished walking home from school in October. Authorities say Harrell lured Somer into his parents' home, where she was asphyxiated and tossed into a trash bin.
The sheriff's office had filed murder and other charges against Harrell last week. He was already being held on child porn charges in a separate case.
Harrell was being held without bail.
