SANFORD, Fla. — According to Sanford Police, around 4:40 Sunday afternoon, Christopher Fres and his wife Sade were cleaning out their car at the Extreme Klean Car Wash at US 17-92 and Santa Barbara Drive. They were on their way to a family gathering for Easter.
Police say the couple was approached by a man who wanted to steal their car. Soon after, a fight ensued between the couple and the suspect. The suspect had some sort of assault rifle with him and shot Christopher Fres. His wife was able to get away by driving out onto US 17-92.
The couple had their 1-month-old daughter with them at the time of the shooting. Neither the child nor Sade were hurt.
Fres was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to Fres' mother. He underwent surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his leg and is expected to be okay.
The suspect fled on Santa Barbara Drive and police are still looking for him.
