Seahawks safety Jamal Adams reportedly out for 2022 season with torn quad

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams will reportedly undergo season-ending surgery on his quad, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Adams tore his quad in the Seahawks' win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night and had to be carted to the locker room after limping off the field.

He appeared to injure himself while attempting to tackle Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson early in the second quarter. On Tuesday, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll called Adams' injury "serious."

Adams' tenure with the Seahawks has been marred by injury after he was traded to Seattle from the New York Jets in 2020 for, among other assets, two first-round picks. Adams missed nine games over the past two seasons, including five games in 2021 with a torn shoulder labrum that required surgery. He also missed time during training camp this summer after reinjuring a broken middle finger in his left hand.

When he did play, though, Adams was one of the best safeties in the NFL. He set the NFL record for defensive backs with 9.5 sacks in 2020 and finished with at least 80 combined tackles in his previous five NFL seasons.

The Seahawks signed Adams to a four-year, $70.58 million deal in 2021, which at the time was the most for any safety in the NFL. He was eventually usurped by Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James, who sit second and first on the list, respectively.

Now, Seattle will try to replace Adams with journeyman safety Josh Jones, who tallied seven combine tackles in Week 1.
