OCOEE, Fla. — Ocoee City Council members decided to continue to issue red-light camera tickets for right-turn violations following a discussion about the issue Tuesday evening.
Ocoee currently has eight red-light cameras installed at six intersections. Of the roughly 17,000 Ocoee tickets issued so far this year, more than half of them are right-turn violations.
"It's a safety issue with me and as I've said, I've gotten caught twice and I know I did wrong. I didn't even review it," said Mayor Scott Vandergrift.
But police said that right-turn violations aren't black and white, and it prompted city leaders to reconsider the red-light camera policy.
"I sit and watch, and I watch people come up to them and they're just more of a traffic jam at these major intersections," said Commissioner Rusty Johnson.
Johnson was the only commissioner to vote in favor of suspending right-turn tickets and only one resident spoke out against the tickets.
"That's the one I keep getting a ticket on. I have had like three," said resident DeeDee Craig. "I don't feel like it's fair."
But after a four-to-one vote, Ocoee's red-light camera program will remain as is.
