A 19-year-old was shot and later died and three other teenagers were hospitalized after two men opened fire on the 1400 block of Ridgewood Avenue on Saturday, police said.

The victims have been identified as Darshawn Broadwater, Leeroy Gadson, Jamie Evans and Donnell Ellis. Investigators said Ellis died on the way to the hospital. Gadson and Broadwater remain at Halifax Hospital in critical condition, while Evans suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, police said.

Police said all four victims were shot in between the Pilot Motel and Tropizar Motel, located off 14th Street along busy U.S. 1 in Holly Hill (see map) . Investigators said two men in a black SUV pulled in front of the motels where the four teenagers were standing. After an argument, the passenger fired shots from a chrome semi-automatic handgun, police said. Eyewitnesses said they saw the shooters pick up the shell casings from their weapon before speeding away.

On Sunday morning, officials located the black SUV that police said the suspects were driving in when the shooting occurred. Investigators told WFTV they have determined the SUV was a stolen vehicle. The SUV was found parked at an apartment complex in Daytona Beach about eight miles from the shooting scene.

Police will begin a methodical search of the SUV on Monday in hopes it will help them find the suspects.

"It is very disconcerting when something like this happens so close," said eyewitness Beth Mobbs who lives two doors away from the crime scene. "And I'm very shocked, very shocked by the seriousness of what's occurred so close to where I live. It's very scary."

The area is known for illegal activities and police think the suspects knew the victims.

"We believe that this wasn't a random act, that these individuals may well have been connected in some way," said Chief Mark Barker, of the Holly Hill Police Department.

But the crime happened right on the city's main thoroughfare, a place where anyone could have been caught in the crossfire.

"It's terrible, we're trying to get to the bottom of it, see what the motive for the shooting was and we'll take it from there," said Barker.
