SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies in Seminole County are trying to catch the people who have been using an open field as a dump.
The problem area is at the south end of Lincoln Avenue, near State Road 417 in Sanford.
Sanford resident Florida Young works hard to keep her neighborhood clean.
"When I get up in the morning time I see garbage in my yard sometimes, garbage down the street, and I just get my sticker and get a bag and go down and pick it up and put it out by the road so the garbage man can get it," said Young.
She was surprised when WFTV's Tim Barber showed her what he discovered in the woods at the end of her street.
Barber found piles of trash, from TVs to toilets. There were old, decaying mattresses and newly discarded bottles.
Seminole County deputies said dumping in the area has been going on for years.
The dumping has become such a problem that the Sheriff's Office has increased patrols in the area, They said those patrols are paying off.
One man was recently busted for dumping carpet in the area.
He's faces littering charges, which could land him in jail.
Deputies said they're sure he's not the only one making a mess.
"I just pray that they would stop littering and dumping stuff ... and just take it to a Dumpster," said Young.
Because the county owns the land where the trash is being left, it will be their responsibility to clean up the mess.
