St. Cloud, Fla. — Food trucks will be allowed in certain areas of St. Cloud now, after a vote by the city council Thursday.
The city’s zoning laws previously prohibited food trucks, but a law passed by the Florida legislature that went into effect in October banned such prohibitions.
The ordinance allows food trucks to operate under the “Highway Business” zoning designation under a Conditional Use Permit.
The council removed a number of proposed restrictions from the ordinance before passing it, including one that would have required them to sit on parcels of land at least one acre in size, and 500 feet from any restaurants.
Another restriction would have limited food truck permits to 12 months.

At the meeting, council member Linette Matheny said the ordinance was “just the beginning.”
She proposed the idea of establishing a food truck park in the city. The council has already begun the process of exploring city property that might be suitable for such a project.
