Student Stabbed In Chest, Arm By Other Teen

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A student at Winter Haven High School was stabbed Monday by another student, police told WFTV.

Winter Haven police said 16-year-old Luke Kendall was stabbed by 16-year-old Jade Mose. Police said Kendall was flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center; his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Kendall's sister said he was stabbed in the arm and the chest and doctors are checking for any damage to his lungs.

Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester says there appeared to be no motive for the stabbing at the Winter Haven High School courtyard, where students gathered before classes. Hester says Luke Kendall was stabbed five times by Mose, and it's not clear if the students knew each other.

School officials put the school on lockdown until police arrived, while a coach detained Mose, who was then arrested for the stabbing. Officers said another person could face charges in the case because, after the stabbing, a third person moved the knife used to stab Kendall.

The Kendall's family friend said Luke is home-schooled, but participates in ROTC and runs cross-country at Winter Haven High School.

Hester says Kendall is hospitalized in Lakeland in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to police, Mose was charged in April with possessing a weapon on school property. He was being held at a juvenile detention center on charges of attempted second-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a weapon on school property and violating probation. Lt. Brad Coleman said police will ask for Mose to be charged as an adult.
