The identity of the victim, as well as cause and manner of her death, will be determined by the Oregon State Medical Examiner, the Portland Police Bureau said.
The shooting occurred near a park in Portland that has been the site for several protests in recent years against police killings, The New York Times reported.
“I was sitting in the room talking to my wife, and all of a sudden you hear repeated gunshots,” Jeff Pry, who lives in the area, told the newspaper.
A protest had been planned at Normandale Park in solidarity with Amir Locke, a 22-year-old Black man who was shot by police in Minneapolis earlier this month, KPTV-TV reported. The protest was planned to begin at about the time the shooting occurred, but it is unclear whether they were related, the television station reported.
Police in Portland have acknowledged using force more than 6,000 times during protests in 2020, the Times reported. The department’s actions prompted a reprimand from the Department of Justice, the newspaper reported.
