Alabama charter boat crew rescues kitten from Gulf of Mexico

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Catching catfish is not unusual. An Alabama charter boat crew, however, caught a cat.

Steve Crews, who owns and operates Still Flyin Charters in Orange Beach, said his boat was in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday when crew members discovered a kitten struggling to stay afloat in the water, WALA reported.

“Our catch of the day. Poor little guy was sucked out by the tide,” the charter company wrote on its Facebook page. “We caught him just outside the pass in the Gulf. He was struggling to stay up.”

Crew members originally thought they were watching a sea turtle but quickly sprang into action when they realized it was a feline in distress.

Crews told WALA that he was not sure how the kitten got into the water but believes it was a feral cat that got swept up into the tide.

“He was struggling to stay up,” Still Flyin Charters wrote on Facebook. “We caught him, brought him in the boat and let him recover.”

Crews said he found a home for the waterlogged kitten, but it did not want to go with that person. So for now, Crews and his wife are taking care of the skittish cat, WALA reported.

Crews said he and his wife have not decided on a name for the kitten. He said he prefers Sharkbite, while his wife is partial to Lucky, the television station reported.
