MOBILE, Ala. — A 9-year-old Alabama girl has been charged with assault in connection with her 4-year-old brother’s beating death on Thursday.
First responders found the 4-year-old unresponsive after receiving a medical emergency call at around 8 a.m. and pronounced the child dead inside the Mobile home, AL.com reported.
The girl, who has not been identified publicly, is accused on court documents of beating her brother to death with a broomstick, WALA reported.
The Mobile County District Attorney’s office confirmed the girl’s assault charge to AL.com late Monday.
The boy’s aunt and caregiver, 53-year-old Yolanda Coale, was charged Friday with one count of aggravated child abuse, the news outlet reported.
Court documents state that Coale awoke to the sound of screams and found the 9-year-old sister allegedly beating her 4-year-old brother, WALA reported.
Court filings also document evidence that the boy suffered long-term abuse prior to his death and that repeated abuse reports were registered at the Jacob Drive address, but Coale was not named specifically in those documents, the TV station reported.
