Arizona drivers or state ID holders now don’t necessarily have to carry a wallet with them in some cases, now that their identification can be legally presented in a digital format on their iPhones.
The Grand Canyon State is the first state to allow a digital version of identification through the Apple Wallet app when traveling by air.
But don’t ditch the hard copy identification card just yet.
The digital identification is only accepted if the person has TSA PreCheck. They will also need their physical ID cards to fly home from areas that don’t accept an Apple Wallet ID, basically any state but Arizona right now, CNN reported.
Physical ID cards are still needed to go to a bar, get a document notarized or show law enforcement. Those rules apply in all states including Arizona.
Other states may soon follow as Apple said last year that it was also working with Georgia, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah.
Apple will soon be rolling out digital identification in Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio and Puerto Rico, Apple said.
The identification is the latest introduction for Apple Wallet, which already stores credit cards, movie tickets, boarding passes, gift cards and even car keys in a digital form, CNN reported.
A user will have to upload a selfie after entering a photo of their ID or license. There will also be some facial and head movements that need to be completed with all of the information uploaded to the state for verification, Apple said.
Once approved, the user can tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on airport security readers when asked to provide identification.
The feature is available on iPhone 8 or newer running at least iOS 15.4 and Apple Watch Series 4 or newer running at least watchOS 8.4, CNN reported.
