PITTSBURGH — Furries are hoping to descend on Pittsburgh once again this summer for their annual Anthrocon convention despite the coronavirus outbreak.

The convention, described on its website as one of the world’s largest anthromorphics conventions, caters to the “furry fandom,” or devotees of “animals or objects given human characteristics,” according to the Anthrocon 2020 website.

The group says it’s been in daily contact with VisitPittsburgh, local hotels and the David Lawrence Convention Center. As of right now, plans for this year’s convention, slated for July 2 to 5, are still progressing, according to an update on the Anthrocon website.

Organizers are also looking for the best way to hold the event safely for everyone and say health officials may decide it may not be safe to hold the event this year.

The group says it will continue to monitor the situation daily and should have a decision by the end of May. When it does, the group says it will post an update on its website and social media.
