Chicago has been chosen to host the Democratic National Convention in 2024, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Democratic National Committee selected Chicago over bids from Atlanta and New York, The Associated Press reported.
The convention is set for Aug. 19-22 in 2024. According to the Sun-Times, the event where the party will nominate a candidate for president is expected to draw between 5,000 and 7,000 delegates and alternates and attract up to 50,000 visitors to the Windy City.
According to the Sun-Times, President Joe Biden called Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker to tell him about Chicago’s selection on Tuesday morning before leaving for Ireland.
Chicago hosted the 1968 Democratic convention, which is best remembered for the clash between police and protesters opposing the Vietnam War. The city also hosted the 1996 convention when President Bill Clinton won the nomination for a second term in office.
Biden has indicated he will run for a second term as president but has not made a formal announcement. So far, two others, Robert Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, have declared they will run for the Democratic nomination.
Republicans will hold their convention in Milwaukee in 2024.
The conventions took place virtually in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
