Feds seize more than 1,100 pounds of meth in California watermelon shipment

OTAY MESA, Calif. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered more than 1,100 pounds of suspected methamphetamine hidden within a watermelon shipment in California on Tuesday.

The confiscation marked the second substantial meth seizure within four days at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility in San Diego, after officers intercepted more than a ton of meth in a medical supply shipment on May 15.

According to a news release, the Tuesday watermelon shipment was referred for further examination at about 6:45 p.m., revealing a combination of 193 wrapped plastic containers and packages of methamphetamine concealed within the watermelon crates.

The estimated street value of the methamphetamine is approximately $2.5 million.

The truck’s driver, a 47-year-old Mexican man, was arrested on suspicion of narcotics smuggling and has been transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego, where he faces federal charges, the news release stated.
