The man died after taking the jump Tuesday night at the Palisade UTC apartment complex in University City, The Associated Press reported.

Merriam-Webster defines BASE jumping as “the activity or sport of parachuting from a high structure (such as a building, tower, bridge or cliff).”

Police told KNSD that the 48-year-old victim was found on the street below the 23-story building, and that BASE jumping is not legal in the city. The man was wearing a helmet.

“We’re unclear as to whether the parachute malfunctioned or if it just didn’t have enough time to open up properly and deploy,” Captain Scott Wahl of the San Diego Police Department told The Associated Press.

Investigators told the San Diego Union Tribune that the victim’s 16-year-old daughter witnessed his jump. “It’s not just one life lost, it’s another that is completely devastated,” Wahl told the paper. “Our heart goes out to her and the rest of his family.”

Security guards at the building told KNSD that people have been BASE jumping at the building for at least the last month.
