TOKYO — A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked northern Japan Saturday morning, shaking buildings and triggering a tsunami advisory near Fukushima, which was devastated by a deadly quake a decade ago.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the shaking started around 6:10 a.m. at a depth of about 33.5 miles centered off the coast of the Miyagi prefecture.

Buildings trembled as far away as Tokyo but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the area but lifted it about 90 minutes later. The region was heavily hit by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which caused the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant meltdown. An estimated 20,000 people died or went missing. Officials said a strong earthquake last month was an aftershock of the 2011 event, CNN reported.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority said no issues were detected at power plants.
