Gomez, 28, will play the lead part in a big-screen biopic about Silvia Vásquez-Lavado, the Peruvian mountaineer and social entrepreneur, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“In the Shadow of the Mountain” is based on the life of Vásquez-Lavado, the first Peruvian woman to summit Mount Everest and the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits -- climbing the highest mountain on each continent in 2018, the website reported.

The film is based on Vásquez-Lavado’s upcoming memoir of the same name, which is expected to be released in 2022, People reported. The film does not have a release date, the magazine reported.

The project will be produced by Scott Budnick’s company, One Community, which helped finance “Just Mercy,” along with Academy Award winner Donna Gigliotti and her Tempesta Films company, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film will be written and directed by Elgin James, the writer-director of “Little Birds” and co-creator of “Mayan’s M.C.," the website reported.

Vásquez-Lavado’s achievements also include her commitment to survivors of abuse. She founded Courageous Girls, a nonprofit that helps survivors of childhood sexual violence heal through mountain climbing, E! Online reported. She has organized treks to the base camp at Mount Everest for members of the nonprofit, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Silvia is a force of nature,” Gigliotti, a four-time Oscar nominee who won best picture for 1999′s “Shakespeare in Love,” said in a statement. “Scott and I are so excited to work with Elgin and Selena to tell this story of resilience, courage, adventure and humanity.”

“We are thrilled to get to work bringing Silvia’s incredible and inspiring story to life on screen,” Budnick said in a statement.

Gomez released her latest album, “Rare,” in January. She is scheduled to produce the psychological thriller, “Dollhouse,” and reprise her leading role in “Hotel Transylvania 4,” People reported.

Gomez is also returning to television to star with Steve Martin and Martin Short in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” the magazine reported. It marks Gomez’s return to scripted TV years after her breakthrough starring of the Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.”
