Students rescued from school bus after Ida dumps rain, floods roads in Pennsylvania

SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Officials rescued school children Wednesday morning after the school bus they were riding got caught in high waters brought by the remnants of Ida over the Pittsburgh area, according to WPXI.

Around 7 a.m. Wednesday, WPXI reported that a school bus got stuck in floodwaters on Seavey Road in Shaler Township. It was not immediately clear how many students were onboard during the incident.

Photos shared by the news station showed rescuers at the back of the bus, where the emergency exit was opened. Water on the road was high enough to submerge the tires of the bus.

Police said students were evacuated from the bus “to a safe area” by 7:20 a.m. The road was closed for about half a mile due to flooding. Police asked that people avoid the area.

Update 07:20 am - All students who were on the school bus were evacuated to a safe area. Road Closure: Seavey Rd is closed between Elbe Dr and Soose Rd due to roadway Flooding. Avoid this area.

Public safety officials in Pittsburgh said Wednesday morning that flooding had been reported across the city.

“Numerous water rescues are being conducted and motorists need to heed all flood barriers and avoid driving through rising waters,” officials said. “Please use caution.”

Earlier, officials with the National Weather Service’s Pittsburgh office warned that the region faced a moderate to high risk of flash flooding as the remnants of Ida moved over the area. A flash flood warning was in effect until 12:15 p.m. Wednesday for parts of the region.
