BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A Texas man who pleaded guilty to a murder that followed an argument about money owed on rooster fights was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Adrian Garcia pleaded guilty on Oct. 7 to the 2019 murder of 59-year-old Ezequiel Garza, KVEO-TV reported. He was sentenced on Wednesday by Judge Juan Magallanes, the television station reported.
According to Cameron County Sheriff’s Department online booking records, Garcia was arrested on Aug. 18, 2019, after the death of Garza in Harlingen.
Deputies arrested Garcia after discovering Garza’s body inside a blue-colored Jeep parked on a driveway in “puddles of blood with multiple gunshot wounds to the body,” KRGV-TV reported.
Deputies said that Garza’s body was leaning forward toward the steering wheel of the Jeep after receiving multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office.
An investigation determined that Garcia intentionally killed Garza “as the result of an argument over money that was bet on rooster fights,” KVEO reported.
“It was a particularly egregious violent act in that the evidence showed that the victim was attempting to leave the scene when he was shot,” Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said in a statement on Thursday.
