WASHINGTON — A government report says that not enough is being done to help veterans who need long term care.
The report was recently sent to Congress. It said that the Department of Veterans Affairs needs to take action now.
“The question of how we can take better care of our aging veterans has been one that didn’t receive much attention,” said Sherman Gillums, a Marine.

Congress agreed and prompted members to ask the Government Accountability Office to look into it.
The report found the demand for long-term care has increased for veterans by 14% over the last five years.
The bigger concern was the VA’s challenges to meet the growing demand.

The GAO recommended that the VA set goals for dealing with long-term care and to make sure programs are consistent across the country.
The secretary of the VA agrees that changes need to be made.
The VA plans to follow the recommendations and have them in place in the next couple of years.
