Apopka, Oviedo, TCHS Among Girls Soccer District Champions

APOPKA, Fla. — District tournaments for local high school girls soccer teams wrapped up over the weekend with a number of close finishes. Championships were won by Apopka, Timber Creek, and Oviedo high schools among others. The first round of regional play takes place on Thursday.

– Apopka has yet to lose this season and is making its sixth trip to the playoffs. The Blue Darters improved to 19-0-2 overall following a 4-3 win in the Class 6A-5 final against Ocoee (13-11-2). Lauren Green has four goals over the past two games for Apopka, who hosted the tournament. They'll now host Palm Bay Bayside at 7:00pm Thursday in a rematch of last year's region semifinal. Ocoee travels to Vero Beach.

– Timber Creek (13-6-2) got a goal by Amy Planeta in double-overtime of the Class 6A-4 final at Freedom (18-3-1) to claim back-to-back district titles. In a rematch of last year's meeting, the Wolves defeated the Patriots 2-1. TCHS will be at home this week, playing for its first win at regionals (0-6 all-time) against Hagerty at 7:00pm Thursday. Freedom's second trip to the tournament is a rematch of last year's game at Oviedo, won by the Lions 4-0.

– Oviedo (17-3-2) avenged an early-season loss against Hagerty to claim the Class 6A-3 title with a 2-0 win. The Lions have had to overcome a number of injuries this season, but advance to the playoffs under coach Scott Waisanen for the fifth-straight time. Hagerty is in for the first time ever. Megan Heil and Lindsay Preston have shared time in goal for Oviedo, while Katie O'Kennedy and Morgan Campbell lead the team offensively.

– Bishop Moore got a second-half goal from Nia James to turn away Lake Highland Prep 1-0 in Class 3A-7. The Hornets (17-6-2) host Satellite Beach while LHP (17-4-2) is on the road at Melbourne West Shore. Harmony defeated Eustis 3-1 in Class 4A-6 and will host Belleview at 7:00pm Thursday.
