Lauren Adkins

WINTER PARK, Fla. — It's been said that records are made to be broken. That's not to say they're what's most important, though.

Last month, Lake Howell senior volleyball player Lauren Adkins set the school's new career mark in kills by surpassing the 1,023 compiled by Ruthie King, a former player of the year.

"The night she broke the record she casually said something to me about her dad mentioning that she might have just broken the record," Lake Howell Coach Terri Kruczek told WFTV.

Then she went right back to playing the next serve, hardly showing any interest in the accomplishment.

"It is a big deal, though," Kruczek said. "Stuff like that doesn't happen often."

Adkins is one of eight seniors playing for the Silver Hawks this season. She has already verbally committed to sign with North Carolina.

Even after she moves on, the hard work she put in with the Silver Hawks will continue to be on display in the form of a banner bearing her name in the Lake Howell gymnasium.

Not that she's all that comfortable with such notoriety.

"She is extremely modest, sometimes shy," Kruczek said. "With her, it's all about the team."

As the team prepares for postseason play, Adkins is closing out a 4-year varsity career at outside hitter that was established while playing alongside talented teammates that helped compile a 75-15 record over her first three years.

Kruczek says of Adkins, who is also the team's leader in aces and is second in digs, her skills have improved as she's grown into a stronger and more alert player.

"She knows the game better than most I've ever coached," Kruczek said. "She physically dominates in this county."
