Many people lost everything after Hurricane Ian, with their houses and vehicles completely flooded.

Residents in the Daytona Beach neighborhood near Campbell Middle School said that the floodwaters did not recede until Monday.

Margaret Harrison, who lives in the neighborhood, recalled the horror of seeing people swimming for survival.

“People (were) walking with their kids and bags going to B-town in the middle of the night just to get to higher ground,” she said. “Some people had to put their kids on top of their cabinets just to try and save their kids just (because) the water was too high.”

Although the area is prone to flooding, neighbors said this is some of the worst they’ve seen in 30 years.

“It was very scary,” resident Florie Daniels said. “You look at your car and the water was almost to the top your car.”

There was a donation drive at Campbell Middle School Tuesday and another will be held at noon Saturday.

But the Midtown community is urging elected officials to help them as many people don’t have insurance.

“We need help from the government and the president,” resident Walter Curry said. “They need to come over here and help us ... big time.”
