Tropical Storm Mindy makes landfall in Florida, downpours expected early Friday

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hurricane Larry is a Category 2 storm, and Tropical Depression 13 has now formed. Read updates below:

11:30 p.m. update

Mindy is sliding along the Gulf coast of the panhandle near Tallahassee and I-10, Channel 9 Certified Chief Meteorologist Tom Terry said.

Some morning and early afternoon downpours will be coming from the south side of the storm, Terry said.

Meanwhile, Larry will bring with it a risk of dangerous rip currents.

9:25 p.m. update

The center of Tropical Storm Mindy has made landfall at St. Vincent Island, bringing sustained winds at 45 MPH with higher gusts, the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday evening.

5:10 p.m. update

Tropical Depression 13 is now Tropical Storm Mindy.

The system, which is in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, has winds in excess of 40 mph.

It is forecast to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle over the next several hours.

“We’re steering clear of any direct impacts tonight, but we’ll be watching some storms moving through on the south side of the system tomorrow,” Terry said. “The track will bring it across the Florida-Georgia line and back over water off the Georgia coast tomorrow, moving away.”

4:40 p.m. update

Tropical Depression 13 formed in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center will issue a track and advisory by 5 p.m.

11 a.m. update

Hurricane Larry remains a large and powerful storm, the National Hurricane Center said.

On the forecast track, the center of Larry should pass east of Bermuda on Thursday, and move near or over southeastern Newfoundland late Friday, weather officials said.

Larry’s maximum sustained winds have decreased to 110 mph. Larry is expected to gradually weaken over the next few days but it will remain a hurricane.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Bermuda.

5 a.m. update

Hurricane Larry remains a large category 3 storm, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm will continue to move northwestward with no chance in strength. It’s maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph, with higher gusts.

Forecasters said Larry is expected to pass east of Bermuda on Thursday.

The storm is forecast to gradually weaken over the next several days but it will remain a hurricane.

Weather officials said “dangerous” swells will affect many western Atlantic beaches this week, including Central Florida beaches.
