Marion County: Power outages, downed trees across the county

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that hazardous conditions still exist as Hurricane Irma makes its way through the county.

Sheriff Billy Woods reports on Facebook that there are many downed trees tangled with power lines. He asks that residents stay off the roads until crews can clear the obstructions.

He also says traffic signals are out across the county and advises drivers to treat these as four-way stops.

Belleview has reported a large water main break and residents are encouraged to boil their water before drinking, cooking or bathing.

Marion County will be under a curfew from 10 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

He also reported that 4,800 people are at local shelters Monday morning. These shelters are without power and are operating on generator back-up.

During the storm, Marion County sustained Category 1 winds for hours, measured around 45 mph in Ocala according to National Weather Service data.

Total rainfall in areas across the county ranged from 6 to 10 inches.

The Marion County Building Safety Office will be open Tuesday to process storm permits only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Marion County Public Schools will remain closed through Wednesday while officials assess the damage.
