Why did the waters of Tampa Bay recede as Hurricane Ian approached?

TAMPA BAY, Fla. — As Hurricane Ian continues to impact Florida’s coasts, local residents have seen receding waters in Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

But the reason behind them might not be so clear.

Meteorologist Kassandra Crimi said that hurricanes have a circular direction to their winds.

She said that while areas in Naples and Fort Myers are feeling 150 mph winds coming onshore, areas that are north of the eye, including Sarasota and Tampa, are feeling over 100 mph winds moving offshore.

The “offshore” pull of the winds is bringing the water with it, leading to the draining of Tampa Bay.
