Action 9 Confronts Home Depot About Roof Issues

Orlando,Fla. — Several homeowners claim they paid "top dollar," for new Home Depot roofs, because of its warranty. But then couldn't get their leaks fixed. One family said the roof had leaked for more than 5 years. Action 9's Todd Ulrich took their complaints to Home Depot, and now the company is taking action.

"We can't have anything here," said Maria Marriott. She claims when it rains, parts of her Melbourne home are soaked and she says it's been that way ever since Home Depot contractors installed a new roof. "I want Home Depot to make it right."

Maria claims the company attempted several repairs but the leaks didn't stop. She had mushrooms growing inside her closet, damage to a porch room and to a wall in the garage. "We can't live like this, there's evidence of mold."

In Lake Mary, Berny Veileux says he also fought Home Depot over a new roof warranty. There's damage from a single leak but Berny claims the company wouldn't fix it. "They said it wasn't covered because it wasn't a 10 year warranty."

Both homeowners say they picked the Home Depot contractors even though it cost more, because of its national reputation and peace of mind warranty. Action 9 has investigated 3 Home Depot roof complaints in 6 months.

Maria Marriot and her husband also hired an attorney and a licensed architect who inspected their roof. He found the installation and repairs that followed didn't keep the rain out. "The roof's flashing was not properly installed. That is causing the leaks," said architect Luis Correa.

Home Depot told Action 9 the family failed to notify the company its repairs had not worked for 3 years. And in both cases its salesmen had extended the warranty to 10 years without company approval. But now it will send crews to fix the leaks in both homes.

"Without channel 9's and your involvement they would not have done that," said Berny Veileux.

The company denies the Marriott's claim that they have 80 thousand dollars in water damage. Home Depot resolved a third roof complaint from a consumer who had contacted us .
