Dyson's new hair dryer is quiet but costs $400

Dyson has been a longtime trusted brand in fans, heaters, air purifiers and, most popularly, vacuum cleaners.

But now the company is producing a new kind of product -- a blow dryer.

The Dyson Supersonic is advertised as lighter, safer and quieter than traditional hair dryers.

A smaller, digital motor placed in the handle of the Supersonic shifts high-pitched sounds often produced by hair dryers to a higher frequency that exceeds the reach of human hearing, meaning quieter blow drying.
Plus, the motor's placement in the blow dryer's handle, instead of in its head, like most hair dryers, changes its weight distribution, making it more comfortable to hold and use for longer periods to time, the company says.

Dyson says the tool is safer too.
While most blow dryers draw in air on the side or back, the Supersonic sucks in air through a filter on the bottom of the device’s handle, creating less risk of the user’s hair accidentally getting sucked into it.

Burns are less likely to occur with the Supersonic because of sensors that monitor the heating elements in the head 20 times every second to ensure that a constant temperature is maintained, the company says. And if the device gets too hot, it automatically shuts off.

But the Supersonic comes at a steep price. The $400 device, which comes with accessories including a concentrator, a smoothing nozzle and a diffuser, will be available in the U.S. in September.
