Orlando police officer shoots armed man who tried to carjack a driver

ORLANDO, Fla. — A police officer shot an armed man Wednesday morning at a shopping center, Orlando police Chief Orlando Rolón said.

He said a police sergeant was patrolling North Westmoreland Drive near West Colonial Drive at about 10 a.m. when he noticed two men forcing another man into an SUV.

Rolón said the sergeant called for backup and followed the SUV, but the driver would not stop.

He said one man bailed out of the SUV and two others -- including the man who was forced into the vehicle -- were taken into custody for questioning.

Rolón said the man who ran from the SUV tried to carjack someone but was unsuccessful and was confronted by police at the Western Way Shopping Center on West Colonial Drive near North Tampa Avenue.

He said an officer shot the man, who was armed with two guns.

The man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Witness Anne Burton told Channel 9 she spotted the man running from police.

“I saw him run, and I saw the police running behind him. And then I heard shots,” she said. “I heard about six shots. I thought I better get inside because bullets don’t know nobody.”

The identities of those involved have not been released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in police shootings.
