ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — The city of Orlando has been fining gas stations near the Orlando International Airport for not posting their prices, and on Tuesday, WFTV learned that some Orange County leaders want to do the same for stations near some of the theme parks.
A gas station in Lake Buena Vista doesn't advertise its price. It's $4.59 a gallon, but people would not know that until they pull up to the pump. Some Orange County leaders said they want that to change.
A Mobile gas station in Lake Buena Vista is just yards away from the entrance to Walt Disney World. Its a popular place for tourists to stop and fill up, but some Orange County commissioners also said it's a trap.
Being in a high residential and tourism corridor, it really looks like they are just taking advantage of the folks who are out in that area, said Orange County Commissioner Scott Boyd.
Boyd said the county may consider a new law to require a Mobile gas station in Lake Buena Vista and others to post its prices for drivers to see.
Today, I actually instructed staff to go ahead and take a look at the ordinance that they have in place in Orlando that they've been working on, said Boyd.
Boyd is referring to the ordinance the city of Orlando has in place that is forcing the owners of two gas stations near OIA to post their prices. The two stations near OIA sell gas for nearly $6 a gallon. The city's ordinance requires they post the prices or be fined $250 a day.
I think it's vitally important that they are advertising their fuel prices. Get taken advantage of, said Boyd.
Drivers WFTV spoke with on Tuesday said the same thing.
It is a trap, said driver Nick Guerra.
Orange County commissioners are trying to figure out how many stations don't post prices.
Boyd said he would like to move quickly to get an ordinance in place.
