DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.,None — You expect to see heavy traffic, rip currents at times and you can expect to get jellyfish once in awhile. It just usually doesn't happen all on the same day, and on a holiday.
Eyewitness News saw beach patrol in Daytona Beach Monday morning already trying to manage the crowds and the parking situation.
Beach patrol has dedicated three officers to doing nothing but keeping people from double parking, and from lying in between cars. That is against county ordinance, and it becomes a big problem on a holiday weekend.
Not only does it take up spots for cars, it puts people at risk of being run over.
No beaches have had to close to cars yet Memorial Day weekend, due to filling up, but Monday is the most crowded day beach patrols have seen.
The rip current risk is elevated, and the worst time for it is through about five o'clock Monday
Close to 100 lifeguard towers are manned up and down the beach.
But there's also a current pushing people out of those rips, and that has cut down on the need to perform a lot of rescues so far.
The water is warm, around 80-degrees, but warning flags show that swimmers are not alone in the water. Southeast winds have pushed in jellyfish and Portuguese Man o' War.
Some lifeguards and some swimmers have reported being stung Sunday and Monday.
Lifeguard towers are stocking vinegar to try to neutralize some of those stings.
