Lake County teachers, students prepare for return to classroom next week

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — With students back to school in some districts and others opening soon, Channel 9 is looking at how many teachers have decided not to come back this year.

Reporter Myrt Price talked with the Lake County union president and checked with districts all over Central Florida.

Lake County students will be headed back to classes next week.

Seminole County students return to school in-person, online

Some will be going back to brick-and-mortar schools while other have opted for online learning or a combination of both.

The Lake County Education Association president explained that some teachers are nervous about returning to the classroom.

Officials said close to 75% of teachers reported they wanted to come back to face-to-face learning.

The district said less than 1% of teachers said they didn't want to come back because of COVID-19 fears.

Lake County officials said since last school year, it has had 30 teachers retire and 178 separations.

Officials said they had 211 separations around this time last year.

Seminole County Public Schools said 465 teachers retired or resign 2018-19 school year, 21 teachers retired or resigned 2019-20 and 37 teachers retired or resigned so far this school year.

Marion County Public Schools said it normally hires 200 to 300 teachers every year.

This year, officials say 220 teachers have resigned and 74 teachers have retired.

Orange County school officials said 388 teachers resigned and 155 teachers retired. Last school year, they lost 763 teachers.
