Troopers: Driver runs over child while backing out of driveway

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Troopers said a driver ran over a 3-year-old while backing out of his driveway on Sunday, leaving the child in critical condition.

The incident happened around noon at 4466 Canna Drive in Orlando, FHP said.

Officials said 30-year-old Luis Galvan-Sanchez was backing out of his driveway in his Nissan SUV when he ran over the child, who was playing in the street at the end of the driveway.

The victim, 3-year-old Aunjay Grice, was playing with his 8-year-old sister and the two were unsupervised, according to investigators. Galvan-Sanchez told troopers he did not see Grice in the road.

"He went to the back of the car, put down the hatch and then he got in the car to back it up and hit the little boy, which is 3.  So you can't see a 3-year-old behind a big silver truck," said Stacey Norris, who said she is a relative of Galvan-Sanchez.

The 3-year-old was rushed to Arnold Palmer hospital in critical condition.

Investigators said the uncle of the child was supposed to be watching after the young boy. According to investigators, the uncle was at another nearby house when the accident happened.

FHP said Galvan-Sanchez was cited for improper backing and having an expired license.

The supervision of the children remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
