Parrish Medical Center Provides Emmi® Patient Education Programs

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Free, easy-to-understand online educational programs give patients control of their healthcare

Parrish Medical Center believes that the more information patients have about their healthcare, the better outcomes they will experience. This is why PMC offers its patients access to Emmi, a free, online educational program.

Emmi is a series of online presentations that makes complex medical information easy to understand. Using plain language, animation and graphics, Emmi educates patients about upcoming surgery procedures, chronic conditions and safety.

Research supports the value and efficacy of the programs. In a randomized controlled study by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, researchers found that patients who had viewed an Emmi program about their upcoming procedure had decreased anxiety, lower sedation medication requirements and shorter procedure times.

University of Chicago Medicine found improved scheduled procedure attendance for patients who had viewed an Emmi program—more than 30 percent.

“Currently, the Emmi programs are being scheduled within Pre-Admission Testing, Sleep Medicine and Women’s Health,” said PMC Vice President, Acute Care Services, Edwin Loftin. “Emmi Solutions supports the ability to message patients through our secure web portal. Additionally, the multimedia programs can be formatted for viewing within the patient-facing portal, providing patients with a single website for all their healthcare information.”

PMC continually monitors the program. In one survey, 100 percent of patients viewing an Emmi program said they would take new action in managing their health. Patient comments include: “Wow! I’m very impressed with this system. It covers just about everything needed to know before my procedure. It answered a lot of questions as well.” “Very informative as to what to possibly expect when time comes for the radiation portion of my treatment.”

Patients are not rushed with Emmi. Each program is approximately 15-30 minutes and can be watched at the patient’s convenience – whether it is from the comfort of their own home or wherever there is Internet access.

There is no limit on how many times a program can be viewed and programs can be stopped and restarted at any time. A summary of information can be printed.

Self-registration is available for patients scheduled for an upcoming procedure or for those with a chronic condition. Sometimes as part of a patient’s care plan, a healthcare provider may issue a unique access code to view Emmi programs.
