Homeless Activists Arrested In Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — Police arrested four Food Not Bombs volunteers on Monday for violating a city ordinance that limits mass feedings.

Three other volunteers were arrested last week for giving food to a large group of people in downtown Orlando at Lake Eola.

Everyone who was arrested knew they were breaking the law, but that didn't stop them from offering food to more than two dozen people on Monday.

"Are you trying to get arrested? Is this about politics or about helping the homeless?" asked WFTV reporter Mark Boyle.

"I have work tonight so I hope not to get arrested but it's about both," said Food Not Bombs volunteer Brock Monroe. "I mean, if we don't have liberty as Americans, what do we have?"

Monroe and three others were arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail.

Group organizers said even though there have been arrests, they will continue to serve food and are hoping to send a message to city leaders.

"This is ridiculous, I was sharing food with people who need it. Food is a basic right, food is not a privilege," said one Food Not Bombs volunteer.

Food Not Bombs has been challenging the city ordinance limiting mass feedings to twice a year in downtown Orlando. The group has already reached its limit.

Organizers said they have another food serving planned at Lake Eola on Wednesday night.

Police said if they have to, they'll be back out to make more arrests.
