DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Police said lives were put in danger when a man began firing at another car during rush hour Thursday, sparking a chase with officers.
The chase ended near Clyde Morris Boulevard and Dunn Avenue in Daytona Beach.
The accused gunman was arrested and his girlfriend is in custody and being questioned.
Hunter Miller, 9, had just taken a spill on a scooter when he heard the commotion down the street.
“I came out here, saw all these cars. I counted them. There were like 13 police cars and a SWAT team and dogs,” Miller said.
While Miller went inside to get his dad, Daytona Beach police were busy arresting Ryan Inglett, 27.
Police said Inglett opened fire on the other side of the city.
“Task force officers were in the area of MLK and State Street when they observed a white SUV pull up to another car and a white male put his arm out the window and fire six to eight shots at the occupants of the vehicle,” said Chief Mike Chitwood of the Daytona Beach Police Department.
Both vehicles fled but undercover officers followed the SUV until it reached Clyde Morris Boulevard.
Just past Halifax Hospital, they said Inglett made a run for it while his girlfriend took the wheel.
Officers said when Inglett jumped out of the car, he cut through an alley, threw the gun under a tree and raced down the street, until officers cornered him.
“It just goes to show you once again, the kind of thugs and scumbags we as police have to deal with day in and day out,” Chitwood said.
Police said there have been no reports of gunshot wounds at any hospitals in the area.
