150 hit the waves for surf competition in Cocoa Beach

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Nearly 150 Special Olympics athletes from across Florida hit the waves this weekend in a surfing competition in Cocoa Beach.

The competition was held Friday and Saturday at Shepard Park on Cocoa Beach Causeway.

It was part of the Ron Jon Surf Shop surfing program where athletes take weekly lessons with surfing professionals to get ready for the competition.

“This is tremendous. It’s helped in her confidence and she really enjoys it,” said parent Tim Ford.

The competition ended with an award ceremony for the surfers.
