17-year-old accused of swiping laptops, cellphones near Full Sail

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Khadijah Holgate never takes her eyes off her expensive electronics.

"We definitely should be wary where we leave out laptops, because it's not safe to leave your laptops out in the open," Holgate said.

She said she's even more attentive knowing 17-year-old Jay Calcedo was just arrested near Full Sail University, accused of swiping at least two laptops from people at the library and a nearby coffee shop.

One of the victims was so determined to get his laptop back he took off from the Starbucks and jumped over a hedge to try to catch the thief.

An Orange County Sheriff's Office report said Calcedo got away with the victim's $3,500 laptop. He was writing a novel and had it saved on the computer.

Luckily, he got his computer back.

In another incident Calcedo allegedly walked into the Full Sail library and took a student's laptop when she wasn't looking.

Arrest papers said he later put it up for sale on Craigslist.

An alert detective came across the item and tracked it to the teen.

Calcedo has since been arrested for the thefts and is accused of cellphone and scooter thefts in the area as well.

The thefts have led the Sheriff's Office to issue a warning to watch personal belongings.

"Even in the most relaxed setting, somebody may be watching you," said Jane Watrel with OCSO.
